We call on the American Diabetes Association to stand up and safeguard students with T1D by updating its 'Guidance for the Use of Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) in the School Setting' to align with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act and the settlements commissioned by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) in 2020, about the obligation of schools to remote monitor CGMs when asked.

Purpose of this petition:

  • In 2020, four Department of Justice closing letters revealed that schools, by refusing to monitor alerts transmitted from students' T1D CGMs to an app downloaded on to a school-provided device and failing to train staff in their use, may be in violation of the federal Americans with Disabilities Act.

  • The American Diabetes Association's CGM school guidance contradicts these settlement letters and contributes to schools' non-compliance with federal Americans with Disabilities Act obligations which endangers T1D safety, may deny federal rights, increases medical emergencies, and impedes academic progress.

  • The American Diabetes Association recognizes CGMs as the "standard of care" for T1D treatment, yet many school districts nationwide cite the association’s CGM school guidance to refuse or unreasonably restrict CGM use for students with T1D.   • Their guidance should educate and recommend that schools download CGM monitoring apps on school devices, enabling real-time remote monitoring of alerts from students’ T1D CGMs, as the failure to do so results in daily emergencies, classroom disruptions, missed class time, and unnecessary nurse visits.

  • The American Diabetes Association must use its influence, which encompasses its role and impact in diabetes advocacy and education, to safeguard T1Ds and educate schools about their federal legal obligations, advocating for changes in policies, practices, and procedures that unfairly limit T1Ds' access to their right to medical safety and equal education, leaving no room for violations.
