Director Advisory Council Member
Kelly Revell
Kelly is a dedicated advocate for people living with Type 1 Diabetes. Her experience across different ages and stages gives her unique insight into the need to adapt diabetes care to current technologies and standards of care. In addition to her contributions to raising national awareness about the needs of students with diabetes, Kelly has helped improve awareness and access to diabetes technology locally and at the legislative level in Virginia, working to modernize how diabetes is managed and reduce stigma in school settings.
The Familial Web of T1D
Kelly has lived alongside Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) her entire life. Her father was diagnosed in his twenties, just months before she was born. Without access to today’s advanced technologies, he passed away at the age of fifty-six. Years later, her son was diagnosed at fifteen months old. Unlike his grandfather, modern diabetes technologies have allowed her family to manage T1D without defining their limits.
Advocacy Begins at Home
After her son’s diagnosis, Kelly quickly realized how little she knew despite growing up around this disease. She immersed herself in education and later became a Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF) Outreach Volunteer. In this role, she supported local families of newly diagnosed babies and toddlers as they transitioned to life with diabetes.
FOLLOWT1Ds
In 2023, Kelly turned to FOLLOWT1Ds while navigating school-based diabetes care in kindergarten. What began as advocacy at the school level expanded into statewide efforts across Virginia to ensure students with T1D receive the safety, support, and accommodations they are legally entitled to. Kelly now serves as a Director and Advisory Board Member, providing media insight, policy advocacy, and strategic guidance.
